Internet Gaming Disorder is included in the most recent version of the DSM-V as a condition that requires additional consideration and research.
Internet and gaming addiction is a fast rising issue with our young adult population. The growth and prominence of technology affect the daily interaction and communication styles of our families. Many young adults are being labeled “as failure to launch,” meaning they are not meeting the standard developmental milestones. A largely identified symptom in these “Failure to Launch” adults, is a compulsive use and abuse of internet gaming, cell phones, and other isolating technology. These adults are showing an increase in lack of interest outside of the virtual world and an increase in isolation, lack of motivation, decreased living, and communication skills.
